How to prevent mildew and soap scum
The first step to keep a shower clean is to prevent soap build up and growth of mildew. To do this wipe down the walls with a squeegee after showering to prevent soapy water drying there. Consider using natural or liquid soaps in your shower instead of soap bars. Some bars contain talc that contributes to soapy buildup on the shower walls and doors.
After showering open a window or use an extractor fan in your bathroom to reduce moisture. Mildew and mould love warm humid environments and removing moisture will help eliminate this.
How to clean your fibreglass Shower
You can use commercial cleaning products to clean your fibreglass shower. Please ensure you read the labels on these products to ensure they are designed for use on fibreglass surfaces. Some commercial products contain abrasives that will remove scum but they can also scratch the fibreglass surface and ruin its appearance.
There are inexpensive environmentally-friendly products you probably already have in your cupboard that you can use to clean your shower. Vinegar, baking soda and Borax are all great alternatives to commercial cleaners.
You will need
- White Vinegar
- Borax or Baking Soda
- Squeegee
- Sponge
- Squirt bottle
- Paper towel
Simply spray your shower walls and floor with white vinegar then let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Dip a moistened sponge into a dish with baking soda or Borax and scrub the walls and floor. Rinse the walls with clean water and squeegee them dry.
If you have difficult areas soak a paper towel with vinegar and leave the towel on the hard to clean area for approx 30 mins. Remove the towel and clean the area with your sponge dipped in baking soda.
